JW: not enough teaching? On the other hand, he does plenty of recording and touring.
There are other classical guitars whose playing I love but who release few albums. Part of the reason may be that they don't have the commercial clout of JW (or others such as Nigel Kennedy).
However, it is also because many spend a lot of their time teaching. That is worthy and admirable but frustrating for those of us who want more CDs. |

JW did get an honorary doctorate from Southampton in 2005.
Other greats like Barrueco and Isbin do teach. Incidentally I'm not criticising JW for lack of teaching, just repeating something I read.
And of course his LPs, CDs, TV and radio appearances have created a lot of interest in classical guitar. And therefore a lot of people (from beginners to conservatoire students) wanting guitar teachers. |

A year ago Evelyn Glennie returned her honorary doctorate to University of Exeter in protest at the closure of their music department.
Exeter also closed their chemistry department. So much for the Big Bang.
(PS Do chemistry students study the big bang or is that something else?) |
