Does anyone know where I can buy William's arrangement(sheet music), for solo guitar, of the theme to Schindler's List? If not, does anyone know what tuning he uses for that arrangement.. I hear a low C as the open 6th string.. but am unsure about the other strings.

If JW uses a low C on the 6th I guess the tuning would be CGDGBE - that tuning with the bottom three strings tuned like a 'cello is what he used for Couperin and also I think for the Entertainer.
Listening to the Schindler's List theme and the Entertainer back-to-back I'm not convinced that there is a low C in Schindler anyway. Go to www.sheetmusicplus.com and look at Itzhak Perlman: Three Pieces From "Schindler's List". You can view the first page for violin-and-piano. As this in D minor, I guess JW kept the original key (Perlman played on the OST) and played with the 6th tuned to D. |

Well, you are correct Tim, the tuning is CGDGBE. I just lifted the entire piece by ear last night.. if not verbatim then damn close. If anyone wants the music for it I would be willing to write it out in Finale or something. The version I speak of is track 18 from 'John Williams Plays the Movies'. One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written and a great transcription by Williams(guitarist).
And yes.. there definitly is a low C on Williams trascription for Schindler. Take a close listen. I lift music for a living so I have a lot of experience. The only thing I needed was some ideas as to what tuning he was using.. once I know the tuning.. I can figure out anything.

Well, well, I must listen a bit more closely next time. Thanks for the offer of a transcript Aaron, but my limited technique won't be able to play it - I tried CGDGBE once and all I got was a nasty buzzing from the 6th string!
I tried Lamento di Tristan which John Renbourn tunes DADGCD and couldn't fathom it, but it seems to play just as well in a drop-D tuning. Not sure how JW played it. |

If you buy an excellent package called Guitar Pro it gives you access to my songbook.com and in there lies a guitarist's dream.
over 40.000 guitar arrangements in Tab and notation,There are two versions of Schindlers list,and one of them is the version you want and the tuning is
CGDGBE.
It is not easy but is well worth the effort.
Guitar Pro allows you to type music in tab format and it also converts it to notation,and vice versa.
it will also play the music you have typed in. |

On the subject of John Williams (the guitarist) does anyone know where I can find the music/tab for Carillo: Como llora una Estrella? I have managed to learn it by ear but the ending has four harmonic notes the third of which I cannot get as it seems to be on the next fret above the 12th. So I'm wondering if there is a technique that I'm not aware of or the 1st string is tuned slighlty differently.
Appreciate any help. |

Hey everyone, nice board you've got going here :D
I've been trawling the web for a decent transcription of this piece and I'd be forever grateful if Aaron could send me the one he's worked out. I've got Guitar Pro if that's any helpful; otherwise I'm reasonably sure I've got the Finale viewer around here somewhere, or if not I can always download it. My email should be public.
Keith: It could be a forced harmonic, where the left hand frets a note and the right hand makes the harmonic of that note by resting the index finger of that hand above the fret that is 12 frets above the one held down by the left hand, and then plucking the string with the thumb just in front of the index finger.
I make no guarantees for the readability of my sentence or the effectiveness of the technique on classical instruments (I'm mainly an electric guitarist) :D |

The trouble is, Andrew, spammers have been posting on this site recently, messing up the postings order. (We are deleting the spam as fast as it appears) Although Aaron made the transcript offer, he (assumption!) didn't leave an email address. All you can do is hope he posts again - or sees this.
