In the last 40 years, John Williams has inspired a modern renaissance for the classical guitar through his numerous concert appearance, records and collaborations with, amongst others, Sky, Julian Bream, Andre Previn and Itzhak Perlman. Williams is rightly credited as the world's most accomplished, versatile and respected classical guitarist.
Richard Harvey is also an accomplished musician, famous for his performances on woodwind, percussion and other instruments. Richard, a successful British Academy Award winning film composer, has worked with Paul McCartney, Maurice Jarre, Kate Bush and Elvis Costello, but perhaps his most enduring and famous collaboration is with his friend John Williams.

(more info here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/intune/pip/6iest/) - JW and RH appeared live on Radio 3's In Tune programme last Wednesday and played a few pieces. Their contribution starts at around the 1hr 8 mins mark and lasts about 15 minutes.
A little background: I've been away for the last few days and among other things, Mike and I got together on Saturday; one of the subjects of our conversation was Richard Harvey, and he mentioned to me that someone told him that JW and he were doing a gig in Exeter within the next few days. When I got home late last night, at about 3.30am I found the page Mike just quoted. I was going to mention it here, but my computer crashed. Seeing as it was sold out, I decided there was nothing to lose by waiting until I got up in the morning - here I am, to find that Mike posted at approximately the same time I was going to!
I'm really hacked off at myself for not knowing about this. I used to check the official Sony Classical web site (http://www.johnwilliamsguitar.com) about once a week, but seeing as they've not added anything to the gigs page since about a year ago (including, for instance, details of his US tour in the spring), I'd not looked at it since mid-April.
I've now checked it to find out that JW and RH are embarked upon what they call their "World Tour" (wherever I've seen the phrase, and I've now seen it in a few places, it's always in quote marks as if they're not serious). They were in Luxembourg on my birthday a couple of weeks ago, and last week they perfmormed in London. They're off to Spain this weekend, and in Ireland next Thursday (I'd've seriously considered going to that one if not for the fact that I'm attending a wedding). In September, they're in the Far East (Tokyo and Hong Kong)...

I have a suspicion that the material for this tour could be the backbone of JW's next contractual Sony Classical CD, seeing as most of it is new to JW's repertoire. (And when's he going to record Djilile, which he's played on his solo gigs for the last couple of years?).

If anyone hasn't managed to catch the Radio 3 replay on the BBC web site, a piece of information was imparted at the end:
The London concert (as mentioned in my post above) will be broadcast on Radio 3 on 31st July (Sunday Gala). Make a note in your diary! (Schedules haven't been published yet, so I don't know what time, but I or someone else will put up that info in due course.)
Also note that JW will be playing the Concerto de Aranjuez during the Last Night of the Proms in September, which will, of course, be broadcast on BBC TV, Radio and web site. More in due course. |

Richard Harvey, of course, composed and performed the music to Gerry Anderson's 1983-1985 puppet series TERRAHAWKS. So, another link to the Gerry Anderson universe...although not mentioned in the brief biog above...
