In 1964 he married for the first time, though this regrettably ended in divorce in 1969. Does anyone know what her name was? Thanks |

I don't mention it on the site on purpose. The same goes for his second wife, and indeed his third - current one. (And no, I'm not going to name them here, either.) |

Trivial quiz question.....why was JW known as "The New Ford Escort" back in the '70s? |

JW played and recorded several Ford pieces - Granada, Fiesta (from the Sonatina Meridional), Cortina (the theme from 'The Deerhunter'). It seemed only natural he would endorse a new model. In the event he didn't, though it's rumoured that at one recital he introduced the companion piece to Dowland's Queen Elizabeth as 'The Earle of Essex, Her Escort' - he certainly didn't record it under that title. The Ford Motor Company subsequently attached itself to more (ahem) popular music - Dutch progressive rockers Focus, Ian Dury and Tom Robinson. Strange days indeed. |

More likely because he went out with Anna Ford? George |

Unlikely. "Had a love affair with Nina / In the back of my Cavatina / A seasoned-up hyena etc, etc" If you try and and change the name the rhymes don't work. |

I know JWs wife number 2 very famous but I'll respect Richard's decision to keep away from naming them |

I agree. If anyone thinks my Ian Dury misquote named anyone, it wasn't meant to (and I hope it doesn't). I've always enjoyed the Cortina / Cavatina wordplay, and think a Ford Cavatina with alloy wheels, go-faster stripes and furry dice sounds a very contemporary spoof. If your taste in music is governed by who the performer appears on the gossip pages with, there's a whole legion of them in the pop and rock world. Plus a few conductors and violinists of course... And if you want another JW automobile recording, there's also the Honorary Consul. Both rare these days. |

I remember, in 1981, we (the family) went to see sky in concert in Leeds. During the interval, or was it before the show?, my brother turned to me and said, "I've just seen **** ***** walk through that door." So, yes, his wife at the time was quite well known and apparently attended sky concerts, but, like Richard and Mike (and a few others, I suspect), I wouldn't dream of mentioning her name on this forum. Whoever JW is with now, I sincerely hope he's happy - that's the main thing, isn't it? Chris P.S. I've changed the number of asterisks so that her name doesn't contain that number of letters! No clues! |
