Does anyone know anything about Pomegranite on the JW Essential Collection? Is it a Travelling out-take, a pre-Sky demo, or what?

This has really been bugging me and I've trawled the net for info.

www.bucksmusicgroup.com doesn't offer much help except that Fly records evolved into Cube, that Fly had released JW. Oh, and Fly's first release was 'Ride a White Swan'...

Eventually, I took Google's hint "did you mean pomegranate?". That took me to Chris Spedding's website. On his session discography he lists Changes, and at the bottom a single: Pomegranate (produced by Herbie Flowers) c/w Bach Changes, on Fly (BUG 13) released 1971. There's a few typos on this site so I wouldn't like to say if his spelling's really right.

1971? So not 1973, like the Essential Collection gives. But don't ask me about dates, I thought it said 1978 till I got my magnifier out. Must be my age...

I played on 'Pomegranate' as well - it was the first time I met JW. As far as I know it was a one-off single produced by Herbie. We recorded it, if I remember rightly, at Morgan (later Battery) Studios.

I think Herbie may have had a production deal with Fly. I remember doing quite a lot of arranging for him around the early 70s for people like Sandie Shaw and Georgia Brown. I guess they were singles - 'Turn Out The Light' for Georgia Brown certainly saw the light of day, but as far as that single was concerned the title was prophetic.

Thanks Steve. That's really useful.
