Hello, I just thought I'd pass along these links; if Amazon are correct then Castle are reissuing (all?) Sky's albums again on CD. So far vols 1 and 2 have been released: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007735C6/ref=pd_sim_pm_dp_2/202-10551 49-1664614 http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0007735CG/qid=1140037104/sr=2-1/ref=sr _2_11_1/202-1055149-1664614 Great news of course, but it's a shame they left off Dies Irae from vol 1. Would have made for an appropriate bonus track. |

Hah! Of course now I realise I'm a year late! (I blame the progressiveears thread for making these look new :P). Anyway, this is a bonus because I can ask fans here: Have these been remastered? Are they copy protected? |

There's a nice thread on remastering. Look at the "This is curious..." thread under "ebay alerts"... The chances are they're using existing material. As far as copy protection's concerned - I doubt it. Some companies tried this, then found they lost revenue when people found the copy protection was sporadically incompatable with CD players. No-one that I know would buy a CD with this restriction in case it wouldn't play. What can you say when Windows Media Player has audio ripping built-in ? |

If you read Richard's notes about the albums on http://plum.cream.org/sky/albums.htm you'll find that the sound on these Sanctuary re-issues is better than previous CDs. Several other threads on the JW board have talked about re-mastering as well, though mostly from 78s and Sky weren't (quite) that long ago! One of the issues in re-mastering for CD is how many removes the source tape is from the original recordings - some have been done from the original multi-track session tapes, others from the two-track master, others from copies of copies of the master. For this reason some early CDs of analogue LPs had worse sound than LPs (despite the claims for CD clarity) because they were not taken from the original masters - hence a rather soupy sound. Talking of soup, one of the Sufi tales about Mulla Nasrudin concerns the guest who gave him a duck as thanks for hospitality, so that the Mulla too would feel a debt of gratitude such that the guest's friends would also receive hospitality. And the Mulla received a constant stream of friends, and friends of friends, and friends of friends of friends. When the Mulla was visited by the friend of the friend of the friend of the friend of the man who gave him the duck, the guest was somewhat puzzled that his meal seemed nothing more than a bowl of warm water. That said the Mulla was becuase it was the soup of the soup of the soup of the soup of the duck... Tricky, you seem unusually benign about copy protection. Sony have found themselves in all sorts of legal shenanigans in the US about the copy protection they used on some CDs and it's virus-like threats to PC security. |

Re: virus-like & copy protection. If I remember correctly, the recording industry went from (a) fiddling with the recordings to try to prevent copying - which resulted in playback failures, to:- (b) prosecuting grannies and pre-teens for downloading - heard of any cases recently ? to:- (c) installing cookies on playback in a PC - which can not only be set to disable your PC but to return info to a site without your knowledge. (I do a little programming as a hobby when the pubs are shut - I know what can be done) I wonder if Microsoft will prosecute Sony :-) I can just imagine a MI6 or CIA official being a little unhappy, if, one quiet day, while listening to a CD .... I wonder what's next. Perhaps :- "This CD will self destruct in ten seconds..." The entertainment industry heads are paranoid about people hearing music they haven't specifically paid for. If "Pay per Sound" was possible they would try to use it - oh wait, they already are. Ever wondered why copyright warnings begin with the words "You may not LEND .....". If the industry could legitimse "You must not overhear...", I'm sure it would. The entertainment industry in general wants everything to be on a "Pay per ...." basis. It's even tried to make tape recorders, VCRs etc illegal - and failed. (Much of the current output isn't worth bothering with - let alone recording) The BBC (god bless em') have a much healthier attitude, mainly because we pay a licence. (Keep your eyes open for FreeSat......) |

"...if Amazon are correct then Castle are reissuing (all?) Sky's albums again on CD" I didn't see any reference to other re-issues on the web site. Where is it? |

I'd always assumed that the later albums would get re-issued by Sanctuary / Castle as tracks from Sky 3 onwards are on 'Anthology'. |

Not surprisingly, the Sony copy protection (rootkit) is now widely regarded as a virus (Trojan). If you've any doubts about Sony management's stupidity, take a look at these little tidbits from PCPlus magazine (more to come) and Anti-virus sofware provider Sophos. |
