Looking back over my Sky dvd's I've noticed that the guys quite often catch each other's eye and have a good ol' giggle-Herbie is the biggest 'offender', Kevin is not far behind-even Steve has a sly old grin sometimes-anyone else noticed this? Was it an 'in' joke between they guys? An attempt to make each other laugh maybe? Or just five guys having a ball and not being afraid to show it??! It's good to see though, I usually end up with a smile on my face and it sure makes a change from watching 'serious' musicians frowning throughout their performance!

Perhaps they have a laugh when one of them plays a bum note or something. Not being as good as they are, I wouldn't have noticed.

Well I can give you the definative answer courtesy of Steve Gray:

Usually we were just grinning out of enjoyment, though there was a time once when we did a Val Doonican TV show and I lost it at the end of the organ intro to Toccata. The producer, the excellent Yvonne Littlewood, offered us a re-take, but I said no, let it stand. What I hadn't seen was Herbie's reaction, which she'd caught on camera - he looked as if he'd just been shot in the bottom with an air pistol.

The guys always looked like it was a lot of fun anyway. I suppose it was, what with all of them doing different things as well as their "Day jobs" I suppose it was one big load of laughs!

Lance, If you want a copy of that video Steve mentions, I'd be happy to send it to you, as it shows that very same error, not once but twice (on each run of the organ intro)! Herbie's reaction is so funny, as he leans back almost as if about to fall off his chair in surprise.

Yeah, that clip of them doing Toccata is very funny. Poor ol' Steve! Still, I am guessing that Toccata is NOT an easy piece to play and all credit to Steve for not insisting on a re-take - I bet there aren't that many musicians who would be as modest. But then that's the thing about sky, they didn't appear to have massive egos and they all came across as thoroughly decent guys.

Lance, I can give it as either a finished DVD or as an mpeg2 file, it's your choice. The file would be too big to e-mail though, so will need to be on a disk. My email is 'duncanmyke[at]hotmail[dot]com' if you want to let me know where to send it.
