Further to what I said a week ago about having been away, I suffered major computer problems last weekend and attempts to revive my machine failed at every turn. The most significant problem proved to be a fried hard drive, which I had to pay a fortune to get "data-restored" (and wait a week to get it back; at least I saved some money that way).
I've just bought a brand-spanking-new all-singing, all-dancing up-to-the-minute box which I've finally managed to connect to the internet and I hope over the next 48 hours to catch up with emails and this forum (lots of posts and even more emails to read - my first email collection in 10 days just now provided me with over 900 - around 800 of which were spam...!). Sorry Bill, sorry Tricky (and others), I will reply as soon as I have a moment. From a quick glance over the topics here, it seems I'll have plenty more to say as well! |

Talk to me about it. Earlier this year I mistakenly set up a 'RAID array' on the wrong set of disks. I am usually pretty good about data safety, and keep all programmes on one disk with all data saved to another disk. Then all video storage is on further huge disks. But I was setting this array up and chose the wrong set of disks by mistake during the BIOS process. Aaaggghhhh!!!#*&#$*&/*&^!!! By the time I realised what I'd done it was too late. You know that sinking feeling you get?
I lost everything, all my e-mail, files, pictures the lot on the first drive. The second drive of the new array was untouched (don't understand why?) Had most of my pictures on disk, but not last years. Though data recovery did do some good, most recovered files were unusable.
Lesson learnt, I now keep backups of vital data on at least two seperate disk drives!!! |

I've never set up raid, although I've 3 PCs that can do it. A particularly bad f***up many years ago, before motherboards with raid were the norm, taught me to use a "spare" PC to backup everything. Since then it's grown to 4 networked PCs hardwired throughout the house (not all mine!), with at least 1 backup at any time on shared, unpartitioned drives. All are fitted with CD/DVD RW drives for immediate temporary backups and "hard copies".
Expensive ?. Well, 1 of the PCs was free, my youngest son bought another, a third is 4 years old and very stable. The wiring (provided by my eldest son who works in a PC store) was done while decorating.
The stabs of fear I used to get are now a fading memory - but I still cross my fingers occasionally!
Which reminds me, time to backup (nervously touches wooden armrest). |
