This might amuse Bill D.

Just received a recording (obviously a bootleg) on cassette of The Shadows live at the Glasgow Apollo, May 1977. On this particular tour, they have Francis Monkman on keyboards. Hank introduces him and someone in the audience shouts out, in a glorious Scots accent; "Curved Air!". Wasn't you by any chance, was it?

Just thought that might interest or amuse someone. The recording is pretty rough, by the way, and I have no idea how it was originally recorded, where in the audience the 'recorder' was or who it actually came from. Still, a little piece of rock history (albeit one that, apparently, FM would like to forget)...

Actually, George, might interest you, too...

Did you see them there in '77...?

Not me. Never seen them and missed the Farewell Tour. (Kept looking for details and then missed it 'cos I was on holiday.)

Yes, I was there.. (I don't think that was the gig where Francis fell asleep, not in Glesgie...)

I must dig out *my* bootleg cassette and have a listen!

Glad to hear that you got to the gig, George. I myself would have loved to have seen the Shads in 1977, but, at 13, I was a bit too young! They actually played locally (in Cleethorpes) in a popular nightclub and I remember seeing the ads in the local paper. My first Shads gig was in October 1980, by which time Cliff Hall had long since replaced Francis on the piano stool!

Unfortunately, I missed Francis again with sky, as I wasn't able to see them live until 1981, by which point he had departed again! So, like many others, I have to rely on bootlegs and the occasional legit release to enjoy these performances from bygone days.

Incidentally, Bill, the 2004 live DVD of the Shads Final Tour is well worth getting if you are interested. And, just discovered, Herbie Flowers played bass on Brian Bennett's 1969 solo album 'The Illustrated London Noise'...
