I came across a little oddity a couple of days back (I wish I could remember the circumstances).
I assume everyone's heard of Gnarls Barkley (famous for having the first UK No. 1 based on downloads alone).
Apart from Crazy (which was difficult to avoid a few months ago), I've only heard their other stuff in passing and have decided that they're not really to my taste so I haven't delved further.
However, their first album, "St Elsewhere", includes a track entitled "Just a Thought", which is credited to a certain Kevin Peek. Is there another musician/composer of that name? Surely not?
I can't find any tracks of that name on my limited KP collection (which is far from complete), so can anyone with more info (Harald, Mike B...?) shed any light on this?
(P.S. I hope to have some time to do some reading/posting/tidying up on the board this week) |

As far as I know the title "Just a Thought" by Gnarls Barkley contains themes and elements from the title "A Touch of Class".
The latter was composed by Kevin Peek and is on his library album "A Touch of Class", Impress 425, originally from 1980.
Will buy the single "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley which has "Just a Thought" on the B-side in the next couple of days and see what he made out of KPs title. |

This is very interesting and pleasing to know that Kevin Peek will be introduced to a whole new audience who may well seek out other examples of his work.
It is generally felt that the library music of the 1970s was the best and I know that LPs from companies such as Bruton and KPM go for very high prices and are often sampled by many of today's top DJs and producers. The likes of Steve Gray, Francis Monkman, Brian Bennett and Alan Hawkshaw are now considered 'legendary' as far as their library music goes; with LPs such as Hawkshaw's 'The Champ' being much sampled and sought after.
I sincerely hope that this is a market that will be explored commercially and that, if at all possible, we will see some compilation albums coming available in the not too distant future. FM's 'Energism' is certainly long overdue for release on CD, as I'm sure anyone who has heard it will agree.
In the meantime, best of luck to KP and let's hope that this will bring him some new fans. |

| Forgive my stupidity, but the Alan Hawkshaw album that I referred to above is, of course, called The Big Beat and is, apparently, the most sought-after album of the entire KPM catalogue. This hasn't really got a great deal to do with sky, except that I know that Hawkshaw worked with Steve Gray now and again in the '70s, on albums by artists such as The Shadows and Olivia Newton-John. |

By the way I saw Bryan Adams live this summer twice with my kids - Keith Scott his lead guitarist (ex Hall and Oates in the '70s was brilliant. Live at Swindon and Northampton superb. He did an off the cuff acoustic version of Gnarls Barkely - Crazy as someone in crown kept flashing a sign in front of him - not bad
