Many thanks to Mike Breen 18months or so ago who leant me his Laser-Disk of the Westminster Abbey gig, which I then transferred to DVD for him (and myself).
It seems good things do happen for those who wait, and or those who happen to be in the right place at the right time. Because I've just won on eBay a copy of this Laser-Disk myself. There is a certain magic when you look at one of these disks, and realise that actually this technology had been around since the late 70's!! Imagine a huge lp-sized cd that is 3 to 4 times as thick, and you start to get the gist of what a LD looks like.
Now only if they had given the same treatment to the other gigs they broadcast on TV. Not least the year before WA, with the Hammy gig!! |

| One of my friends had a HUGE collection of laser disks many years ago. Unfortunately, because he got into a little bit of trouble (!) through video piracy he had them all confiscated. He did eventually get most of them back and I believe sold them for quite a tidy sum. As you say, they were quite impressive to look at... |

Laser-disk received in my grubby mits at last, superb! Listening/watching it at work (only slightly dodgy) while writing own job description. Re copyright, I don't mind passing on and helping out fans, so long as it is material otherwise unobtainable, and I do it to be able to help, not for the money. Would never touch commercially available material such as the Bedrock gig, Bremen etc.
I now have about 20 odd laser-disks at home. Some of them are films that have never been released on DVD, or are versions of films otherwise not seen, and are unedited. Though I'm not an opera fan, I have one limited edition gold laser-disk of 'Pavarotti in Hyde Park', a superb concert too. At any one time there are several hundred LD's at auction on EBay, have a look - you might find that elusive version of a film you remember and no one else has ever heard of!! |
