As the title indicates, this is the first album John Williams recorded for CBS Records after signing to them in early 1964. Since then, he has averaged at least one album of new recordings every year for the label (which became known as CBS Masterworks in the 1970s and then Sony Classical in 1990). For technical reasons, CBS Records were known as Columbia Records in North America, and this was reflected in the album's title.
